Another Good Year at Bath Hereford

South Wansdyke Archery Club was represented at Bath Archers annual “Hereford” Tournament.  The club has been successful at this tournament in recent years and this continued in 2025.  Andrea Whittle retained The Duncan Craig Armanda Jug and gold medal, first Ladie recurve archer.  Simon Whittle improved a place and was runner up in the gentlemen recurve winning The President’s Cup and silver medal.  Finally, South Wansdyke retained The Cormorant Chalice team trophy, the team comprised Clive Jarrett, Andrea and Simon Whittle.

Clout Returns and with a new venue in 2025

South Wansdyke Archery Club’s annual Clout Tournament returned on Saturday 9th August after a year absence.  Previously held at Farrington Gurney Golf Club, the recent transformation of the location necessitated a new venue.  We were delighted when Downside School, Stratton-on-the-Fosse agreed to host our competition in their beautiful grounds.  A clout is a low-lying flag placed in the ground at 180, 140, 100 and 60 yards depending on the archers ability.  Points are scored for proximity to the clout.  The distances are much greater than our standard target archery, where 100 yards is the maximum distance. 22 archers took to the field on a hot summers day.  At 60 yards our Junior Gents Medal went to Dylan Apleton and Junior Ladies Medal to Riley Edgell.  The 100 yard clout was won by Chris Guilles, with Nicky Solomon and Sharon Adams in 2nd and 3rd respectively.  At 140 yards the gold medal went to Sophie Young, Silver to Suzanne Crosbie and Bronze to Shawn Mogg.  Finally at the furthest distance, 180 yards, first place was Anthony Crosbie, followed by David Aldridge and Wayne Edgell.  A cream tea was served in the pavilion; courtesy of Sharon Adams and the awards were present by club chairman Andy Young.  We sincerely hope that Downside School will have us back next year!

Shawn Extends Handicap Lead

It was a wet start to the day on Sunday 20th July for our annual all day Handicap competition. The first half hour was sheltering under the trees! However the sun came out and we were able to start and finish the round, Hereford and Bristol rounds were the order of the day.

Our medalists were:

Gold – Shawn Mogg (Centre)

Silver – Simon Whittle (Left)

Bronze – Sue Mogg (Right)

Shawn now has a 8 point lead in the Handicap trophy, with 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze this season.

U14 County Champion 2025

Thomas Williams, aged 12, enjoyed his first archery tournament on the 22nd June, after joining the South Wansdyke Archery Club just last year.

The Somerset County Archery Association Junior County and Open Championships provided a friendly and inclusive setting for young people and their supporters, with this year’s event being held in Burnham on Sea. The competition progressed over 3 different distances, a Bristol IV, and participants showed great concentration and skill. After a well-deserved picnic lunch, the tournament concluded, and awards were presented.

With successes across the board, our Olympic archers of the future could be right here in Somerset!

Thomas was pleased to bring home the Men’s Under-14 Recurve trophy for his club. He encourages anyone to give archery a try, and have a go at a beginner’s course. Who knows what you could achieve!

SWAC Archers return with Medals

BATH ARCHERS NOVICE TOURNAMENT  2025:

Steve Edgell (left)  and Chris Guille (right) entered the Bath Archers Novice Tournament on 14th June. The weather was very sunny with the occasional black cloud passing over while we were competing. Steve shot a National 30 and I shot a National 50. We are both Barebow archers so we don’t use any sighting aids to help us shoot. We shot 8 rounds of 6 arrows and the broke for lunch for 45 minutes.  The shooting line was then changed to 10 yards closer for the remaining 4 rounds of 6 arrows. By 2.30pm all shooting had just finished when we had a heavy downpour of rain which lasted 20 minutes after which it came out blazing hot, just right for the presentations. Steve shot really well and came first in the men’s 30 yard National and 3rd overall in the Tournament. I came 2nd in my 50 yard National and also 2nd overall  in the tournament for the team entry. Everyone who entered (45 entries if I recall) had a really nice day with nice people and great organisation by Bath Archers who arranged this friendly tournament.

2024 South Wansdyke Awards

On Friday 24th January South Wansdyke Archery Club hosted their 2024 season awards at Pratton’s Sports and Social Club. The event was well attended, by 30 archers, with a delicious buffet provided by Sharon Adams and Nick Crisp followed by some skittles.

Classification badges were awarded to 37 archers for both indoor and outdoor archery, ranging from Archer 3rd Class to Bowman 1st class. The classification demonstrates an individual ability, as defined by Archery GB for their Age, Gender and Bow type. Notable mentions go to Sophie Young, who shot at a level of U21 female recurve Indoor Master Bowman and twice at outdoor Master Bowman and also Andy Young, who shot a round at the 50+ male recurve Master Bowman level.
